Frances Kitching, a highly respected musician and teacher in the Abingdon area, died in 1968. The Trust set up in her memory makes awards to young musicians who are actively contributing to the musical life in the area in which she worked, with the intention of helping them to continue their musical studies when they leave school.

The principle award, for a player of an orchestral instrument, consists of the Frances Kitching Trophy (a silver cup held by the winner for one year) and a cash award of £300.

Awards are made by audition and interview by a panel of adjudicators chaired by the Director of the Trust.
